The months of November thru March we primarily use live bait , light tackle and fish for the Atlantic sailfish. On the surface in addition to sailfish we will catch dolphin (mahi-mahi), tuna, wahoo, cobia and other species. The sailfish being a bill fish is catch and release, it also is one of the fastest fish in the ocean putting on an acrobatic show when hooked up. The sailfishing is done approximately 5 miles offshore, just outside the main reef line that protects the Florida Keys. Key Largo, with its numerous coral reefs offers some of the finest sailfishing in the world.
In addition to our surface baits, we will also run lines on bottom with live bait, these will produce grouper, snapper, yellow tail, jacks, kingfish, sharks and barracuda. Our fishing trip will start off with us stopping at one of the bait patches to get live bait, once our bait is full with ballyhoo and other baits, we will head to the edge of the reef and the action begins. While on the bait patch we also put rods out for grouper and snapper, nothing like starting the trip with some excellent eating table fare.
Hooking into a tail walking sailfish is a thrill of a lifetime for our clients. All edible fish are cleaned and filleted by our crew for you to enjoy, and all our local restaurants will cook your catch Keys style.
The months of April thru October we will primarily be fishing for Dolphin(mahi-mahi). We will also catch Tuna, wahoo, sailfish, Marlin, shark, Amberjack and others. The dolphin population explodes in spring and summer months and most days we limit out, 10 mahi per person. We will primarily be trolling rigged baits and lures to attract the dolphin, they will range from 5 lbs to 60 lbs per fish. Once a school is located and a fish hooked up, we will keep one in the water to attract the others, it is not unusual to have 40-100 behind the boat in a feeding frenzy. We then use light spinning rods to hook up the mahi, it is not unusual to have 5 or 6 hooked up at the same time. One of the greatest excitements in Keys Fishing is hooking into the dolphin and watching the acrobatics, they put on quite a show.
When back at dock our captain will clean and bag all of your fish for you to enjoy or have cooked at a local restaurant.
